Us map with coordinate grid8/23/2023 ![]() Latitude and Longitude is a global coordinate system that measures, by angular distance, latitude from the equator and longitude either east or west of Greenwich, England, or the Prime Meridian. If your GPS unit needs a ZONE for UTM, choose 12 North, which is the UTM Zone that covers the entire Lewis and Clark National Forest. To navigate using the UTM grid, your settings should be UTM/UPS, and your datum should be NAD83 CONUS. There are other formats of “Lat/Long,” so be sure your GPS unit setting matches this Degrees, Minutes and Seconds format. To navigate using the Latitude-Longitude graticule on a map, you will set your GPS unit position format to ddd.mm.ss.s, which indicates Degrees(°), Minutes(’), and Seconds (”), which is the format of the map graticule labels. These are often found in the setup menu, under a ‘units’ or ‘location’ tab, but different GPS units vary. The key settings for your GPS unit are the position format and map datum. You need to choose which of these grids to use to navigate with, and set your GPS unit accordingly. These may include a Latitude-Longitude Grid (often in red), and a UTM Grid (or National Grid, often in blue). Many maps have several features that can help you to navigate using a GPS unit. ![]()
